What is Legal
Engineering?
Legal engineering applies systems thinking, data, and emerging technologies—including AI—to design, build, and improve legal processes and products.
- Automation & AI – Agentic systems, smart review, predictive analytics
- Process & Service Design – Mapping and streamlining user journeys
- Document Engineering – Structured templates, version‑controlled clauses
- Data & Interoperability – Open schemas, APIs, justice metrics
- Governance & Ethics – Transparency, bias mitigation, security, and trust
Code of Ethics: Introduction
Like medicine, law, and other engineering disciplines, Legal engineering is a profession and not merely an occupation. It carries with it specialized knowledge, a duty to society, and the responsibility to up hold high ethical standards. These responsibilities demand not just technical competence, but professional judgment and accountability. ASLE draws inspiration from established codes like those of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), recognizing that ethical obligations in design, delivery, and technology use are essential to building trust and ensuring justice. As legal engineering evolves, our ethical framework will adapt to reflect both the needs of the public and the unique challenges of this emerging field.
While codes of ethics provide a shared foundation, they are not rigid formulas. Legal engineers are expected to approach ethical dilemmas with the same creativity and care they apply to system design—with a constant commitment to public welfare and professional integrity. A concise statement of professional standards guiding all ASLE projects and member conduct is available here:
